Images of Disabled Children

Think of a disabled child or young person whom you know and jot down some of the words that you use to describe them.

You have probably been able to use a range of ways to describe them: their personality, achievements and attributes. If you found it difficult to identify a child or young person for this activity, you might want to think of a child from a book, TV programme or film. What does this tell us about the way children with disabilities are portrayed in society, and what might be the implications for you when observing a child or young person with disabilities?

Historically, images of disabled children have portrayed them as tragic and to be pitied, with compassion for the parents, or the child and family are seen as ‘superheroes’. Despite some changes over time, these are still predominantly negative with limited images of disabled children in the media and children's literature (Middleton, 1996; Barnes, 1992).
